Design Interview1Q is known for their insightful interviews with reputable designers in the creative world. This is a short excerpt from Design Interview1Q with legendary designer Erik Spiekermann. The task is to to translate Spiekermann’s words into visuals using motion design as a medium. This was a lot of fun! To capture Spiekermann’s essence on screen, I look into his cadence, inflections and how he chooses his words to visualize the timing of the animation. At the same time, I look into his design mindset and legacy to inform my design choices. After going through this process, I have a much better feeling of how my video will turn out. 45 seconds of someone speaking doesn’t feel very long, but it’s an entirely different story when it comes to transcribing. I have to account for every word in my storyboarding process as I need to maintain a fun and cohesive video all around.
A good motion design piece is further elevated by its sound design. I’m thankful to Akusmi and Tonal Music for allowing me to use their music in this video. As a cherry on top, I also add in personal sound design touches. The final piece is a 1-minute video covering Spiekermann’s thoughts on the future of designers, driven by motion design. This project helped me expand my understanding of the motion design workflow.
